My Second Favorite Explanation of What Dungeons and Dragons is Like

My favorite explanation still came from my Father. He never played but was trying to explain D&D to his friends in "The Crew" after I started playing and was getting the other kids Up the Lake to try.

"Imagine you play Monopoly at one house. Then the game ends. A few days later you go to another house with different people, but you keep the same piece and all the properties and money from the first game."

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was a close second place.

I had a great time watching the new Willow show. So did my wife, daughter and sister.

Grandma said she watched it, but didn't care that much. Then again, she liked Wednesday, which I figured she'd have issues with. Therefore, I've given up trying to predict what she would like.

Dungeons and Dragons has always been a big part of my life. This is both as a player and as Dungeon Master.  My favorite DMing experiences has always been with new players, as they tend to get more easily caught up in the interactive storytelling and less in the statistics and level grinding.

Howdy readers.  Since I’m battling the Sinus Infection that Wouldn’t Die, here’s a blast from the past.

It's a write up I did on a message board back in the early 2000’s when Third Edition Dungeons and Dragons was being modified.  It’s up to at least 5^th edition now, but most of my points still hold as those aspects haven’t changed.  

Since the whole "what is Dungeons and Dragons" question has been raised at work thanks to Stranger Things, this post is now timely again.

Show Us Your LARP!

I started playing Dungeons and Dragons in the fifth grade.

Once I figured out that Hobgoblins being “giant goblins” did not mean they were twenty foot tall knobby kneed, googly eyed, sneaker wearing mops demanding our adventuring party give them, “FRENCH FRIES!”  it became a regular part of my life.

Once my parents realized it was all storytelling in our head and I did not, in fact, fall twenty feet off a ladder to be caught by a much smaller and scrawnier friend (I was playing a Halfling.) they were quite supportive.
