I really need to send Disney a thank you card.
Because as far as I can tell, even though they know there is no evidence to support the idea that these movies will do well at the box office, they make a Tron film just for me every fifteen or twenty years.
Much like Legacy the trailers made Tron: Ares look like a non stop, action only, fight and chase fest.
Also much like Legacy this movie was truly a Tron film.
It had many moments where it slowed down to let the audience take in all the pretty and shiny effects.
It had thoughtful bits about the pros and cons of technology with various benefits and risks seen through the eyes of good and evil people.
It had ideas about sentience, artificial intelligence, and what it truly means to be alive.
And, yes it did have cool fights and chases, but both using cool original ideas and fun flashbacks to uses of past elements of the Tron universe.
I was concerned as I'm not really a Nine inch Nails fan, but they did a fantastic job creating a Tron-y sounding score that I will definitely add to my collection. And when we had the obligatory return to the Eighties looking original grid, for some techno-hippie moments with Jeff Bridges, the vibes from the Wendy Carlos music had me cheering and tearing up at the same time.
Jared Leto may not be everyone's favorite actor, or person. However, you cannot fault the casting department for selecting him to play someone who isn't quite human, but is trying to be. He worked excellently.
I also think it is hilarious that his method acting demands of being called "Ares" and staying in character all the time he was on set was COMPLETELY ignored by Jeff Bridges...
Because he felt that since he created The Grid "Flynn" could call him whatever he wanted to.
Oh well, maybe we'll get some more, other media, Tron 3.5 outings.
Then again, with the Terminator like overtones, and hints of the dangers of a machine takeover, maybe Disney owes me a thank you card. (He said, shamelessly plugging the first post he went really crazy on that he always felt didn't get enough attention.)
