Wrestling Moments: Televised "House" Show- Several Times Between March 18, 1989 and April 1, 1990

Disclaimer- I don't know when this happened, and it was probably more than once.
However, few moments summarize why I enjoy the goofiness mixed with athleticism mixed with behind the scenes connections of old school WWF more than this one.

Other Disclaimer- I knew I would enjoy writing these, but I am having far more fun than the large amount anticipated. Therefore, the length of them will continue to creep up as I fill them with more entertaining (to me) asides. I do hope others are enjoying these, but that isn't the main focus as I am having a ball.

Other Other Disclaimer- I write to keep myself sane and focused, and to make people laugh. There are other things weighing on my mind that would do none of these if I wrote exclusively about them. Before getting back to the fun- make sure you're registered to vote, and vote like the "inalienable" rights and freedoms and also the safety of you and your loved ones are in jeopardy...because they are.

Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man Through a "Kid's" Eyes

It's truly amazing how connected these films all are, and how they carry the story through them. Sixty-five years before Tony Stark showed up at the bar General Thunderbolt Ross was in, the tales from one film series and a whole separate movie met head on in this very early shared universe.

Wrestling Moments: Televised "House" Show- Sometime in 1989ish, I have no idea

In my experience (which I've been spending way too long providing evidence of) Ted Dibiase, "The Million Dollar Man" is the greatest pure heel that has ever come out of professional wrestling.

Mad at All the Multiverses

Doctor Strange, The Multiverse of Madness came out...
a while ago, apparently.

This is the problem with getting way ahead on posts. Sure I sleep better, but the timeliness is a bit compromised. On the positive side, I feel less guilty about spoilers.

Wrestling Moments: Saturday Night's Main Event XII, October 3, 1987- Hershey Park Arena

This one is rare as I was able to see it live.
Well, It was filmed a week and a half before airing.
Therefore, I got to see it pretend to be live.
But that's wrestling for ya.

The Mummy's Tomb Through a "Kid's" Eyes

L
on Chaney Jr. takes the role of the titled monster...
again.

He brings so much soul to the part, as always. Yet, sadly, when they recycled the already recycled Ancient Egypt footage in any of his three turns as Kharis, they didn't bother to add him in.

Wrestling Moments: WrestleMania I, March 31 1985- Madison Square Garden

The original WrestleMania was a huge gamble and THE big turning point for Professional Wrestling as a whole shifting away from self contained regions, called territories, it worked under for many years.

Nights with the Moon Knight.

Yes, this is late, and Doctor Strange will be later. My wife really got in to the Universal Horror Films, transitioning them from sporadic appearances to "every other Thursday."
I'm so proud.

I'm really liking the fact that Marvel Studios continues to select deep cut characters, allowing me to experience these stories almost like a normal person.

Top Ten Memorable Wrestling Moments

Ghost of Frankenstein Through a "Kid's" Eyes

The first Frankenstein film without Karloff, but Bela's Ygor comes back!
Note- Unlike the immortal monster, there is no reason given for Ygor surviving the last movie other than he is "hard to kill."
Nice if you can pull that off.

Ygor is still a scarier and a more complete character than Dracula.
I will die on this hill.

It's cool to see Lionel Atwill's range. He gets to be a Mad Scientist in this one instead of a policeman.

Aside- Yes we did watch Young Frankenstein after the first three Frankenstein films. I was too busy laughing in anticipation of, at, and after every joke to take any notes.  Watching it close to the originals does highlight what a magnificent job Brooks, Wilder and company did recreating the look of these classics.

Left Handed Thinking

A short diversion before the next ongoing series of Monday posts.

When we were kids, it became clear that my sister was left-handed.  My grandparents didn't understand fully, leading my Dad to (calmly and rationally, which he excelled at) explain the genetics of the situation and that she had to get the left handed genes from both sides of the family.

Immediately, both Grandparents proclaimed in a highly offended voice:
"No one in MYYYYY family was left handed!"

The One... The Only... Frank Ferrante!

Yes, I know I'm behind on Marvel Studios releases.
They're great, watch them, you don't need me for that anymore.
Plus this is more important.
There are people who don't know who the Marx Brothers are.
I asked the young engineers at work if they knew and they all stared blankly until one said,
"The communism guy?"
This is a serious issue.

My trend for just missing anniversaries continues.
The famous Carnegie Hall evening with Groucho was fifty years...
and thirteen days...
ago.

The Wolf Man Through a “Kid’s” Eyes

As has been documented, werewolf stories are my favorites of this type of monster film.  Therefore reaching the defining lycanthrope movie was exciting for me.

Rosa excitement was slightly more subdued, as she asked:
"How many of these do we have left?"
Yes, she's enjoying them, but cracks have started to show. As we continued, however, she enjoyed them to a point where she was asking to watch the next one.
(Above and beyond as a way to avoid other weird crap I like to watch, I mean.)

Ring-Bits

My thoughts on a couple of days I was home alone-

"I’ve got some stuff around the house that should be done,
I’m way behind in my reading,
got a lot of writing and editing to catch up on,

The Mummy's Hand Through a "Kid's" Eyes

Hey, we've finally stopped jumping around and will watch the rest of the Universal Monster films in chronological release order date every other Thursday until some time in November.
Jinkees!
(Not counting the original Creature From the Black Lagoon which we watched before Anabelle abandoned us on our classic horror journey.)

Ghostbusters- Life After the Other Ones

I saw Ghostbusters: Afterlife as soon as the disc came out.
However, it took a while to figure out how I feel about it.

That's misleading.

I liked it a great deal. It's a worthy follow up in the Ghostbusters universe, the run time went by extremely quickly and I could easily watch it again.

Dracula’s Daughter Through a “Kid’s” Eyes

Hey, Rosa picked this one!
Given the other new movies on the "haven't watched yet" pile, that isn't saying much...
But it's something!

It's just the two of us again, as it will most likely be for the remainder of this exercise.

Moving in Strange Ways

Graduating from high school meant Anabelle also graduated from Danceworks
(And now I'm weeping again.)

Even though the Moving Company was cancelled last year (because last year sucked), Anabelle's final recital did occur, due to another burst of Awesome from Miss Chris and Mr. Carl.

The Mummy Through a “Kid’s” Eyes

Besides giving up on these black and white films completely, real mummies- like in museums- give Anabelle the willies. Therefore, not only was there no way she was going to watch this classic, but she skipped out on the Brendan Frasier trilogy as well.
This is a shame, as those are a total hoot.

I never saw the third one before…
Was not expecting Yeti.

Bray Days: We Thought It Would Be Funny

Aside:  (Yes, we are starting with an "aside." And also, apparently, a parenthetical.  Someday I will learn to focus. This is not that day.)
Above is a photo of the ENORMOUS model of the Capital District Area made by the RPI Model Railroad Club. It took up the entire basement under one of the dorms and I completely forgot it existed until I went looking in my Mom's old photo albums for pictures to go with these stories. That should highlight the fact that there may be many other lapses,  inaccuracies and fabrications in these tales from over three decades past.

Why I Should be Legally Barred from Keeping a Dream Journal

Introduction:
My dreams are usually weird enough to begin with that there should be injunctions against me trying to record them.  A few weeks ago, however, things went completely off the rails.

I had a nightmare.

Bray Days: Water Wars

The actual “parties” in the dorm were sedate enough to stay under the R.A.’s official radar, and keep Ed and his crew from shutting them down. However, there was something, non-party or alcohol related, about Bray Hall that inspired high damage bills.

We Don't Talk About Disney Movies...Usually

OK, we talk about Disney movies all the time.

How about: normally I avoid reviewing Disney movies. Because of my genetic predisposition to find them all awesome and wonderful, the write ups would get pretty redundant.

Encanto, however, is different, being that:
It takes place in a Latin location filled with Spanish language,
It contains criminally catchy songs by none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda,
It is almost entirely focused on the themes of extended family dynamics,
And most importantly,
It is freakin' brilliant.

Above and beyond the amount other Disney films live in our home, this one has become entrenched.

Bray Days: The Party "Scene"

That first year, snow or not, we had more contacts with official Fraternities than we would once we were fully isolated from them, by choice, in the E-Dorms.

"THE" Batman was the Appropriate Title

After thirty-three years of wearing these same sneakers (and the accompanying shirt) to Batman movie opening days, they finally did one in live action correctly.  (Nice photobomb, Anabelle.)

No spoilers...until I say there are spoilers later on.

Daredevil Birthday Surprise Post

Daredevil Through a Kid’s Eyes

Or

Happy Birthday Dad! Watch Me Have An Identity Crisis

Hi friends Anabelle here, kind of a plot twist if you’re an avid “kid’s eyes” reader, but it’s my dad’s birthday so bear with me. Father - thank you for shifting your posts around so this “present” can go up on your birthday, and happy birthday!!!

Ahem.

I Miss the Circus

Lately, I've been missing my childhood's annual arena trips to see Ringling Brother's and Barnum and Bailey Circus. We did take Anabelle to see it one of the seasons shortly before it closed down, but she doesn't have a connection to it, and doesn't understand mine.

Yes, these pictures are terrible and I could have gotten better ones online. (But hey! So could you!) However, going through these old programs really brought back the memories, and more importantly the wonder, into sharp focus. (Even if the pictures are not in sharp focus.)

Son of Frankenstein Through a “Kid’s” Eye’s

Well, Anabelle has proven complete resistance to any black and white film that doesn’t feature tap dancing…
Or a “Floot.

Therefore, Rosa and I watched the next Frankenstein classic
while Anabelle was away at school.

"Son" is the last one with Boris Karloff as the monster,

Bray Days: Snow Daze Part 1

Aside- This image was taken around three decades after the events of the story, as can be seen by the existence of the pointy building in the background occupying space that was the parking lot where I kept the first Crimson Thunder at the time.

The other valuable lesson I learned that first semester regarding attentiveness and study habits is going to be embedded into much longer and more chaotic stories about snow, because linear, easy to follow, narrative structure is not how my brain works..

Boba Fett? Boba Fett? Where?!?

I have expressed joy that The Mandalorian is unashamedly a western.  However, I also pointed out it was full of bits from all of George Lucas's other influences that led to the original Star Wars.

There will be spoilers.

Bray Days: Computer Lesson

Aside- Behold! A photo of the wall in my dorm room, where the nervous breakdown documented in this story happened. It is from move in day. Witness the Next Generation poster as proof of me trying desperately to be a fan, before giving up, following multiple seasons.

Besides learning about the health and general quality of life benefits of exercise, RPI taught me several other off the books lessons. Amazingly, some were specifically about study habits.

Bad Geek Confessions: Dune

I finally got around to seeing the new Dune film on blu-ray because I am a casual fan of the franchise.

This is what makes me a bad geek.

Bray Days: Physical Education

Freshman Year was when I started formally exercising regularly. No matter where we ate, that and a youthful metabolism, brought me to levels of healthiness never seen before or since.

Aging is truly unfair. Now I have to walk/ bike an hour a day just to maintain weight, while watching my diet closely. Thanks to my knees (and most of the rest of me) running is no longer an option. Back then I could semi-regularly grab a bag of kettle cooked barbecue chips on the way back from a stint on the track and still be buff and slim.

Amazing Spider-Man films through a Kid's Eyes

Hey, I forgot to mention that the last post was the 11th anniversary of the blog!

Let's celebrate with a throwback to  "Kid's Eyes" since those are getting harder to do, for location and chronological reasons.

Therefore when the franchise rebooted in 2012 with The Amazing Spider-Man, she never got around to seeing them.

Bray Days: Food

Aside- I didn't have any pictures of the dining hall, but I do mention this bridge below. Maybe if I waited less than three decades to write about parts of my life I'd have better pictures.

Food had to be figured out quickly at RPI, and DAKA was there to provide. College meal options have all sorts of side possibilities now, with mixes of “meal points” and virtual cash, plus multiple commercial chains located on campus. We had DAKA, the food service that ran all of the dining halls (with their all you could eat, meal plan system) as well as the Union pizza place and cafeteria. (These were separate from the plans.)

The Eternal(s) Question- When Will I Learn My Lesson?

A spoiler free review for a change.

I missed The Eternals in theaters, because -
A) I know almost nothing about them
and
B) I'm a nincompoop and forgot Marvel doesn't make bad movies.

Bray Days: Sleep Schedules

Aside- This picture is only tangentially connected to the end of this story, but since the makeup came much better than a couple years later when I did the whole costume, I put it here.

Jesse and I had known one another since first grade. One Legend of how we met is that my allergies had me sneezing on my really cheap, ridiculously thin, yellow math paper every day and ruining it. He suggested I turn my head . . .

And the next day I sneezed on his math paper.
Neither of us is sure if this is anywhere near the truth.

Venom- Let Me See Carnage

 The short form:
I have been a Venom fan for a long time.
I liked the first Venom film and I liked this one.  WOO!

It had the same action/ comedy/ relationship beats as the original movie. They were built upon, the story progressed and the bond between Eddie and the Symbiote to become one as Venom was expanded.

Similarly it was also a shorter, old style (pre- giant shared universes) comic book film.

Andy Serkis certainly knows how to direct this kind of thing and did a smashing job, pulling in top notch  AD's and cinematographers he's worked with before helped.

As a fan of the Venom comics I found some key points really weird, however.
Since this review is so late, I will talk about them.

Spoilers on.

Bray Days: Orientation Part 2

Note- That is version one of "the shirt." It was the black replacement that inspired the sign.

Orientation continued once we moved into the dorms (for real) the week before Labor Day. I was thrilled to be assigned to Bray Hall. While the overall floor plan and individual rooms were identical to the other freshman dorms, there was one difference. Bray had a larger than life sized mural of the Original Series (at that point, not counting one Next Generation season, the ONLY series) Star Trek crew on the bridge of the Enterprise.

The Witcher Season 2 Gets the Band Back Together For the First Time

Season 2 of The Witcher dropped on Netflix and maintained the high level of quality that the original season promised.  I was a little late to it because I had to finish He-man.

There are random, probably vague, spoilers, because …  I stopped caring.

Bray Days: Orientation Part 1

The main point of college is the classes, however, an equal if not greater amount of education comes from living on one’s own, and interacting with others from that standpoint for the first time.
