Countdown
to Extinction
Many
“First but not last” moments here after last episode:
A) Megatron believed to be dead.
B) Decepticons fight each other for leadership.
C) Starscream claims that leadership.
D) Megatron is fine with no explanation.
Starscream takes a standard page from the Decepticon playbook and tries to blow up the Earth before running off with the energy. Naturally it goes badly. Even more badly for Doctor Arkevil who thought teaming up with Starscream was the power move.
Meanwhile, Wheeljack rebuilt all of Teletran-One. I’d say this was an amazing feat, but since it only does anything when Chip asks, it’s likely not all that sophisticated.
Megatron orders, “Decepticons land and attack!” against foes that can’t fly. Must be that fire retardant foam still messing with his brain.
Speaking of messed up brains, the Autobots are lured to drive into quicksand. You’d think they could scan the road ahead of them or something? Ooh, Ironhide remembered he can shoot liquid nitrogen!
Starscream made Doctor Arkevil a cyborg! Gasp! But an immobile one. Why bother. Starscream? Were you bored of something?
A final “first but not last” moment.

E) Prime and Megatron need to team up based on
something stupid Starscream did to save everyone.
Megatron in gun form can fire
a crazy unstable thing without exploding just by sticking it in his barrel.
That’s likely to come up again.
The
scene opens in Bali, and it is just as racist as when we went to Peru. They’re
kind of half and half with representation.
Insecticons show up for the first time. Neat! Why they can eat organics is not explained.
Hey, Skyfire again!
Oh, we’re going to meet an unknown foe that eats entire forests, good idea, bring Spike.
We learn the Insecticons have been on Earth more than four million years. This is why they have insect robot forms... ten foot long mostly purple robot forms. Yeah, they blend.
Maybe that’s why they can eat organics, it was part of whatever version of a Teletran-One machine converted them?
They self-replicate. So, does that mean the duplicates have Sparks? (I’m getting ahead of myself.)
Ooooh that’s why he’s called Shrapnel (stag beetle). He has a shrapnel blasting gun. Kickback (grasshopper) kicks a lot. Meanwhile, Bombshell (rhinoceros beetle) does mind control. (Can’t win them all)
Another question, if the Great War between Autobots and Decepticons has been going nine million years, why don’t they know Megatron? He was there, leading their faction from the beginning.
Wait, what?! Wheeljack remembers he can fly?
Energon is confusing, sometimes there’s transition needed, sometimes they just pour oil into the clear cubes and pop! Energon!

Energon is confusing, sometimes there’s transition needed, sometimes they just pour oil into the clear cubes and pop! Energon!
Meanwhile, the Insecticons can eat the
oil raw. They’re good on any long chain molecule, I guess.
Huh, Kickback also has a shrapnel gun? This is so confusing.
Finally, some sense. They left Spike behind for the big battle atop the on fire and prone to explode oil rig. Oh no. He’s there. And now we see why. Spike is the only one that remembers tires are insulators… morons.
Wheeljack is so impressed by Spike not being a moron he offers to design a transform for him. Yeah, at the start of next season we’ll learn why that’s a terrible idea.
Megatron
has built the Constructicons, and they are FAR smarter than the Dinobots. In
fact, they can invent stuff. This back story goes down the toilet next season.
I think Megatron had them Space Bridge in and lied about making them to impress
his boys. THEY ARE SO GREEN! (I don’t mean naïve, all the Cybertronians are. I
mean looking directly at the six construction equipment vehicles hurts my eyes.)
Autobot roll call! It’s cool they do that sometimes to help out.
Bumblebee has a freeze ray? You’d think he’d remember that… ever. (It's possible that this was Cliffjumper and Rhino made a coloring error remastering. But I don't care. Something else I don't care about, Cliffjumper looked so much like Bumblebee I always assumed he was another Volkswagen Bug. He's really a Porsche, but a stumpy one, based on the Penny Racers line. Given Volkswagen makes the Porsche SUV, I feel justified. )
You’d also think the Autobots would have any kind of alarm in the control room of the Ark. But, nope.
Prime accepts Megatron’s challenge to a fair fight. Fourteen year old Spike, being the only one with a brain yet again, points out the “Decept”icon name.
The Autobots, of course lose when Megatron cheats and are exiled to deep space. Maybe they knew he was cheating, since we later learn outer space is chock full of Autobots and other organic and robotic life. (I’m getting ahead of myself again.)
Wait, the Constructicons were supposed to dig into the Ark to prevent Teletran-One from discovering Megatron’s cheating, but they don’t get there till after the fight. Why didn’t Teletran-One monitor it? Or is this a case of the Decepticons thinking the Autobots are smarter than they are?
Prime is down! Man the 1986 movie really was “greatest hits” from the series.
How about that? There is an alarm, and it releases the Dinobots! But the Constructicons have a surprise. I can’t stress how cool it was when I was Spike’s age and the Constructicons said, “Transform phase one,” and we went WHAT? And then “Transform Phase TWO!” and HOLY CRAP THEY’RE DEVASTATOR, A GIANT ROBOT.
I mean, we had seen Voltron do the same with five robots instead of six...

likely earlier that day, but still HOLY CRAP!!!!
Ah,
no wonder Teletran-One didn’t scan the fight, Chip wasn’t there to run it. Seriously,
how the Autobots survived at all those millions of years through war before
they met two teenaged human boys is a mystery.
Hound makes a hologram of a GIGANTIC AUTOBOT to scare away Devastator and company. None of them are surprised - foreshadowing both that some Cybertronians can be that big, and having one they’ve never seen before show up is perfectly normal.
Ooh, all the Decepticons fell into lava and melted. End of series.
