See- I Can Like Films With Bad Paleontology If They're Fun Enough

We saw The End of Oak Street and it was a hoot. 

Much like the first Jurassic Park film, it was the quality of the actors, (specifically Hathaway and McGregor, but the kids did a fantastic job as well)  and their reactions to the prehistoric creatures that established the believability of those animals.

Yes, the Paleontology was nothing short of a disaster. Animals from multiple eras were all mixed together. Characteristics of multiple Pterosaurs were also mixed together. The sizes of most of the animals was ludicrously off.  And the less said about the type, placement, and appearance of the feathers randomly stuck on some of the Dinosaurs the better. 

Also, how it treated time travel may have been marginally less believable than how it treated prehistoric life.

And, I didn't care. 

This film was set in the Eighties, and had a lot of vibes of that decade's horror films, but it also had a great deal in common with classic Dinosaur and/ or Giant Animal films of the Fifties.

What the vibe matched the most however, was an extended episode of the Twilight Zone.

A truly weird thing happened and then the characters had to deal with it. 

Why did it happen?

How did it happen?

What are the ramifications of what happened outside the story?

No one cares.

Besides being well performed, the characters were well created. This could have been a serious drama about a family pretending that nothing is wrong while serious cracks develop in all of their relationships. That would have been a good film. But also dull as dirt, so DINOSAURS!!!!!

Those dinosaurs and other creatures looked cool. (If I ignored the feathers... I could handle all the creatures from different times coexisting, because "wormholes," but seriously, what the heck? Did they think they'd score bonus points just flinging feathers on animals will nilly?  Sorry, I can control myself only so much.) There were so many genuine edge of the seat moments and jump scares that kept the tension rising and falling without making it seem artificial. The crazy time paradoxes were kind of waved at without letting them mess up the narrative. 

It was a fun ride.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

But PLEASE.

Do not make a sequel, because all of that "Waved At" stuff will fall apart spectacularly if we try to look at it again.
